- Cosmetic Imperfections: The most common reason. This includes scratches on the plastic casing, scuffs, or slight discoloration of the container that occurred during manufacturing or shipping.
- Labeling Errors: Misprinted labels, crooked stickers, or outdated branding on the outer casing.
- Minor Capacity Variance: Sometimes a batch of batteries tests slightly below the "nominal" capacity (for example, testing at 96% of the rated capacity instead of 100%). While still perfectly powerful, they cannot be sold as "Grade-A."
- Production Overruns: Occasionally, manufacturers clear out excess new stock by labeling them as seconds to protect the price point of their premium retail lines.
