3Higher capacity than before - but still too low for D cells  Nov 15, 2010 By NLee the Engineer
The rechargeable D cells in this package (Rayovac Platinum LSD NiMH D, 2-Count) offer two major improvements over previous-generation products from Rayovac:

1. The capacity is now rated at 3000mAh, compared to just 1800-2400mAh for previous-generation products (depending on which version you get)

2. The package claims "Pre-Charged" and "Holds charge up to 2x longer" than standard NiMH cells.

I have tested two of those Rayovac Platinum cells (*), using my rigged-up La Crosse BC-900 charger/analyzer. Right out of the box, they hold an average remaining charge of 2530mAh. That means they arrived with over 80% of rated capacity. After just one more charge/discharge cycle, the average capacity improved to 3100mAh, which is better than rated value. Therefore I have no doubt that those Platinum C-cells are indeed low-self-discharge type similar to SANYO eneloop, with 50% higher capacity.

An alkaline D cell is typically rated for about 19000mAh, but only at a very low current of ~30mA. When used at a load of 500mA (such as flashlight), its capacity drops to about half. Those 3100mAh rechargeable D cells offer only about 1/3 the capacity of alkaline cells, which means you'll have to replace/recharge batteries three times more often. But in the long run, using rechargeable will always save you money.

There are other rechargeable D cells with 3x higher capacity (such as the 9500mAh 2-Pack D IMEDION), but they also cost 3-4x more. So this package is a reasonable compromise between price and performance. Another benefit is that each Rayovac Platinum D cells is half the weight of alkaline D cell (70g vs. 140g).

(*)Note:
The batteries I purchased are actually the smaller Rayovac Platinum C cells. Both have exactly the same capacity, because internally they all contain a sub-C cell. I prefer the C cells because, if necessary, I can put them in the D-shell adapters that came with my BC-900.

4Rechargeable batteries that give you their money's worth.  Sep 26, 2011 By Howard
These RAYOVAC "PLATINUM" rechargeable "D" batteries, are my second set. The previous ones lasted 3 years, with several hundred recharges, (and are still in use). I expect the same from the new "Platinum" series, making them a great value. Imagine how much money one would of spent buying, in my case, 6 alkaline "D" at a time for my Sony "boombox", with the amount of use I put them through. Note that, in high draw devices, such as my portable boombox, they give around 4-5 hours use, then need to be recharged. In something like a flashlight, I suspect they would last much longer between recharges. I recommend them.

1Horrible  Apr 28, 2012 By S. Armstrong
I don't usually write reviews, but I had to warn anyone interested in purchasing these batteries. I bought them for only one purpose - to use in my son's swing while he naps. I was sick of constantly buying D batteries and thought this was the perfect solution - boy, was I wrong! I literally used them for about an hour a day and they die after (or during) each use. Then I charge them the rest of the day and overnight only to have them die 3 minutes after I put them in. I've never had a product work so poorly! Very disappointing!
Giving 1 star because you can't give 0.

5RayOVac Platinum Batterys  Apr 10, 2012 By Johnny J. Young Jr.
These are a great buy with super saving shipping. Using six of the D size batterys in my extra long Mag light. Weight wise is no heavier feeling than my standard size Mag Light using two D size alkaline batterys. These battery are long lasting with strong energy out put. Like much better than the alkaline batterys.

2Why get fake D cells when you can get real ones?  May 09, 2011 By Donald Tsang
If you need D cells, presumably it's because you want them to last a long time before you need to replace/recharge them. These are 3000 mAh; you're better off getting dual-AA-to-D-cell adapters like this, and pairs of low-self-discharge AA cells, like Eneloops or Tenergy's Centuras (or Rayovac's replacement for their old Hybrid line, whatever that is now). 4000-4600 mAh, costs less, and is way easier to charge).

Alternatively, if weight isn't a problem, you can get real D cells, like these 8000 and 10000 mAh behemoths: Tenergy Centura D Size Low Self-Discharge (LSD) NiMH Rechargeable Batteries, 1 Card 2xD, AccuEvolution Low Self Discharge NiMH D Cells . The Tenergy cells weigh almost 6 ounces apiece... the AccuEvolution probably weighs over 7 ounces.
