Charger getting better. Batteries same-old same-old. Jun 09, 2010
By NLee the Engineer I almost dismissed this Rayovac Platinum LSD Charger with 2 AA and 2 AAA NiMH package as yet another cosmetic update of the same old Rayovac Hybrid Charger package. But my curiosity got the better of me, and I gave it a try. Here is what I have found:
The charger included in this package is the Rayovac PS33. It looks exactly like the previous PS32, but actually offers several improvements inside:
- The old PS32 is a timer-based dumb charger. It simply charges each pair of AA cells at 350mA for 8 hours, regardless of their status or capacity.
- The new PS33 is semi-smart, in the sense that it monitors the combined voltage of each pair, and will stop charging when BOTH cells are fully charged. Its charging current is also higher at 450mA, which means it takes less time (about 5 hours) to fully recharge a pair of 2100mAh cells.
One remaining drawback with the PS33 is that it can only charge in pairs. This is very inconvenient if you have appliances that require odd number of cells. If you try to recharge one empty cell together with one full cell, the latter one will be badly over-charged.
The new 'Rayovac Platinum' LSD cells are physically different from the old Rayovac Hybrid (check my Customer Image for the scan for both). Electrically, they are almost identical. Both have capacity of 2100mAh. Both claim charge retention rate of 80% after 6 months, etc. One disturbing sign is that: Rayovac previously claims Hybrid can be recharged "up to 500 times", but the new Platinum is advertised on Rayovac web site as just "275 times".
As of this writing, the price of this Rayovac package (PS33 charger + 2 each of Platinum LSD AA and AAA cells) is actually cheaper than buying 4x Rayovac Platinum LSD AA cells, so it is still a good value because the charger is essentially thrown in for free. But if you need to recharge cells individually, get a better charger such as the Sanyo Eneloop 2 Pack AA w/ MDR02 Charger.
[Update on Oct 16, 2010] Long-term self-discharge test: after 3 months sitting on the shelf, a pair of Rayovac Platinum AA cells retained 83% of original capacity. This is slightly worse than the rate for old Rayovac Hybrid, whcih typically can retain 85% after 5 months.
[Update on April 26, 2012] I re-tested some Rayovac Hybrid and 4.0 cells recently, and was shocked to find out that their capacities have all deteriorated badly. In particular, four Rayovac 4.0 AA cell (circa 2009) have dropped from 2100mAh to below 800mAh. Even after more than one dozen Discharge/Refresh cycles on my BC-900, their capacities only recovered to 1100-1500mAh. Therefore I can no longer recommend Rayovac rechargeable batteries.

Compact, easy to use and effective Apr 27, 2011

I've used a certain battery charger for over 3 years now, so the Rayovac Platinum Everyday Charger is the second charger I'm using. That being said, I have to mention how compact it is in size and not in the least bit bulky. I think the fold in-fold out plug charger is what makes it all the more appealing. I love that it can charge 2 or 4 AA or AAA NiMH or NiCad rechargeable batteries at the same time.
The Charger comes with an inbuilt "Auto Shut Off" feature but the backup timer control will turn the charger off after 6 ½ hours of charging. (Plus if you're charging Rayovac's Platinum AA rechargeable batteries you will cut down "charge time" significantly as Rayovac's Platinum AA batteries charge in just 5 hours!)
I've personally had great results with Rayovac's batteries and now that I can recharge these, I'm in frugal heaven especially since we go through a good number of batteries every week thanks to our digital camera!

Too much charger for Rayovac Batteries Sep 23, 2011

Ok, regardless of all the 5-star reviews on this product, be VERY aware, that charging at 450mA for 5-8.5 hours is BAD for most Rayovac NiMH batteries. They just aren't big enough to do this kind of 'short-timer' charging.
A good charger matched to your batteries will charge at 10-percent of the battery's capacity rating. Therefore, a 1400mAH battery needs a 140mA charger. Takes 10-hours to charge it, too. Sorry, just basic physics. Now, go and put a 1400mAH battery into a charger souped-up for a 2500mAH battery, and you will get it charged a lot faster, like this one does...but you will also cut your battery's life expectancy in half, or worse, too.
You cannot cut-time-out of charging guys...charge at 10-percent of the battery capacity, for a 10-12 hour cycle, and optimize your batteries' lifespan. Need more battery, great, get larger batteries...but when you get 2800mAH batteries, then get the 300mAH charger...BUT...then you still have to charge them for 10-hours.
There is no true shortcut here, that doesn't cost you in the long-run. Don't mind frying your 1400mAH batteries at only 100-lifetime charges? Ok, go ahead...but don't say you weren't warned.
The two stars is for the fact that the manufacturer, a battery-maker for a hundred years, knows this...and yet put a package like this together for the sake of sales. Not good.

Just what my old digital camera needed. Apr 18, 2011
By Cliffton Thompson I have an old Olympus D-540 that is horrible on batteries. I tried both generic and name brand "Heavy Duty" and Alkaline batteries and they just didn't cut it. The generic heavy duty ones were ridiculously short lived, first pair turned on...then died with the lens stuck out. Less than a minute of use...haha.
Rayovac, Energizer and Duracell alkalines didn't fare much better. So I was looking at some Sanyo Eneloops and these, well I got these for a good price, I only have 1 set of AA's for the camera, but they seem to hold up very well, I'm not a shutter bug or anything so these will most likely work just fine for my needs without having to worry about them dying on me out of nowhere.

money saver for work Apr 18, 2011
By Kirby In my line of work as both a residential and commercial inspector, one of my main tools of the trade is a flashlight. Needless to say I go through a lot of batteries. I have been using the Platinum LSD charger with AA batteries and I always keep 2 sets of batteries - one set of fully charged back ups and a set in the flashlight. I am impressed with how long the charged batteries last in the flashlight. They last nearly as long as new batteries off the shelf. The one thing I did notice though is that the light doesn't gradually get dimmer as the batteries get weaker - it goes pretty quickly. I always keep a spare set in my pocket each day so it isn't a big deal but this can be an inconvenience at times. This is why I didn't give this product 5 Stars.
Another Plus to the charger is it's relatively compact size for a multi-size battery charger. I had a similar one by a competitor and it is extremely large and that tooki up quite a bit more counter and cupboard space compared to the Ray O Vac charging unit.
Finally, there may already be a converter for a car outlet out there for this, but if not, that would pretty much make this a 5 star rating in my book.
