Not quite "The Sunshine of the Night" but not terrible May 09, 2011
By R. Murray If you are expecting the 1200 lumens of blazing light that you can get out of a dual mantle, liquid fueled, old school lantern then you are going to be sorely disappointed in this one. This lantern puts out about 1/6th of that amount of light (and that's on high). If on the other hand you are looking for a convenient light source to keep you from tripping over furniture in the dark when the power goes out then this isn't too bad. This lantern will light up a room about the same as a flat wick kerosene lamp or maybe a half a dozen candles.
On the down side, this lantern requires (8) D size Alkaline batteries. The batteries cost half as much as the lantern itself. And then there is also that generally cheesy "made in China for a very low price point" feeling to it.
On the upside, this lantern uses a CREE LED which is one of the best LEDs made. It will run approximately 66 hours on low so you could run it for about two hours every night for a month. It is convenient. No fueling or mantles to deal with, no tanks to drain when it's time to stow it, just switch it on and switch it off. And it has a five year warranty which might be worth something if you happen to be near a Coleman Service Center. (If you have to ship it to Kansas or Ontario, the shipping costs likely would make this option cost prohibitive).
If you are just looking for a light source so you are not sitting in the pitch dark in a power failure, this lantern will work fine. If instead you are looking to bring the hay in from the field at night (one of the typical uses of the original Coleman lanterns) it's not going to happen.

Not bright enough Nov 18, 2010
By Sam I could see absolutely no difference in intensity between the high and low setting; so perhaps mine was defective. Additionally the light output, with eight good alkaline batteries, only dimly illuminated a small room. Instead I went with the [[ASIN:B003GPKNDA GE Steel Beam Fluorescent Lantern With Replaceable Compact Fluorescent bulb] which uses four batteries, has a convenient hanging hook, and provided a nice illumination.
