Excellent batteries and USB charger, though not necessarily the best value Jun 11, 2011
By NLee the Engineer This package (SANYO NEW 1500 eneloop 2-AA Ni-MH Pre-Charged Rechargeable Batteries w/ USB Charger) contains two second-generation "1500 cycles" eneloop cells, plus the Sanyo MDU01S USB-powered battery charger. I have already reviewed the new eneloop cells several times elsewhere (for example, see the product page for SANYO NEW 1500 eneloop 8 Pack AA), so here I'll focus on the USB charger only.
Unlike a stand-alone charger (which needs to be connected to an AC outlet), the MDU01S draws its power from the USB port of your laptop or PC. That's why the charger can be made so tiny, and you never have to search for yet another AC outlet. But you must make sure that the USB port is version 2.0 (which means it can supply up to 500mA) or later. Very old computers with USB 1.0 or 1.1 ports cannot be used. Also you should not plug it into an unpowered USB hub.
The MDU01S is a very well-designed USB charger. It offers several advantages over other similar products (such as the Rayovac USB Charger): - You can use it to recharge either 1 or 2 cells, whereas cheaper chargers often force you to charge in pairs only. - It is a 'smart' charger that monitors the status of each cell independently, so there is no danger of over-charging the cell. Cheaper chargers usually have no charge-termination logic. They either charge at a low current forever, or rely on simple timer to stop charging. - The charge time is relatively short for a USB-powered charger: roughly 2.5 hours for one AA cell, 5 hours for two.
Some additional notes about this charger: - You can use it to recharge any brands of NiMH cells, not just Sanyo eneloop. - You can charge either 1-2 AA cells, or 1-2 AAA cells. But you cannot do 1x AA plus 1x AAA at the same time. - Charging current depends on the number of batteries. If you put just one cell in it, the charging current is 850mA. That means it takes about 2.5 hours to fully recharge one 2000mAh eneloop AA cell. But if you put two cells in it, the current drops to 450mA each. So now it takes about 5 hours to fully recharge 2 eneloop AA cells.
My only reservation about this package is that: currently there is an older package (Sanyo Eneloop 2-AA NiMH Pre-Charged Rechargeable Batteries with USB Charger) available at much lower cost. Both packages contain the same USB charger, just that the older package contains two first-generation eneloop AA cells. So essentially you're paying extra only for the two second-gen eneloop cells. I have tested both old and new eneloop cells, and found them to be almost identical electrically. In real life, most people will probably never experience the advertised benefits of new eneloop (such as 1500 cycles vs. 1000 cycles) anyway. Therefore in my opinion, the older package is actually a better value.
[Update on April 30, 2012] As of recently, majority of the 2nd-gen (1500-cycle) eneloop packages are priced lower than their 1st-gen counterparts. So there's absolutely no reason not to go for the newer version now.
I like to add that all my 1st-gen eneloop cells are still working great. I just re-tested some eneloop AA cells which were in service for 4-5 years, and they still have 90-95% of their original capacities.

Charges fast and wont overcharge, has smart sensors Jun 23, 2011

This charger can charge 2 AA batteries in about 5 hours or so. This is very fast compared to other cheap USB chargers. I was worried that it would overcharge my batteries due to this accelerated charging because when I restart my computer, it resets the charger and begins again. However, the charger will charge for a few minutes, then it will recognize the batteries were already full, and stop charging. For a cheap USB charger, that technology is really unexpected and top notch.
You can charge 1 battery at a time, and it will also recognize this and charge it in about half the time as 2 batteries. Other cheap chargers dont have any sensing technology, and aren't able to charge as fast (Often taking 12 hours or more).
The charger has about a 1-2 inch cable connector which is better then just having a USB port that sticks out of the end. It provides stress relief on the USB port and its able to be tucked out of the way. The batteries pop in and out easily, which is a small thing, but its a pleasure. The whole unit is really nice and compact. Other comparable AC wall chargers with the same capability are much larger.
Its easy to switch between AA and AAA battery charging - just flip the little plastic adapter down and thats it. Note that you cant charge AA and AAA at the same time. It has a nice blue LED to tell you the charging status. The included AA batteries work great, and the charger also works just fine with a pair of Sony 2000mah AA rechargeables I have.
This charger is lightning fast compared to other dollar store quality ones. Spend the extra few dollars and get this one - you get what you pay for. (High speed, 1 or 2 battery charging, AA/AAA capability, durability, intelligent sensing circuitry)
After using this USB charger, those clunky AC chargers seem so inconvenient and bulky. This product is just as good or better at a really good value. Plus, it includes the high quality eneloop low discharge batteries (lasting 1500 charge cycles is enough for an entire lifetime, literally!)

GO SOLAR Mar 02, 2012

Set and forget it. This unit like many NIMA chargers prevents overcharging I can leave the batteries charging unattended and not worry. It shuts off when the batteries are charged. I find a 5v 700ma panel (about 8"X8") will produce enough power to charge on full sun cloudless day. Meaning you need full sunlight and no clouds. The charger is a bit finiky about the power it needs to charge. If its less than a perfect day the solar panel wont feed this USB charger and the batteries wont charge. BIG bonus is the same panels can charge my cell phone IPAQ and other USB devices which are not as finiky as this charger. Cell phone and other devices have no problme charging with this setup.
A better solution is skip this charger. Purchase a 7.5V 700ma solar panel and a 4 battery holder. (see photos) This will charge 4 AAs in full sunlight in about 4 hours. AAAs are much faster. Its a simple setup, Wire the battery holder to the panel and monitor the charging with an amp meter or your watch, Once you work with it you will know when the batteries are fully chargerd.
Did I mention this is a great setup for power outages and wilderness trips as well as in the city? I can charge in a car, on a commercial flight, boat, tent etc as long as the sun is shining in a window.
It's a great solution.

Perfect charger Jan 10, 2012
By David L. Medearis Sanyo seems to have captured the lead in rechargeable batteries. I found out the hard way, about the importance of good chargers and batteries. My wife and I rode out Katrina and made use of every power source we could find. It gets awful scary when the world becomes dark and silent, especially in the banana republic we live in. Regular batteries won't do when the power is out for months. This charger is exactly what's needed as a low energy drain, and next time I'll have solar too.
